APABA Silicon Valley Now Accepting Submissions for 2017 Officer, Board, and Committee Positions

Submission Deadline: 5:00 PM Thursday, October 20, 2016

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (“APABA Silicon Valley”) is now accepting submissions from those interested in serving in 2017 as an Officer, Board Member, Committee Co-Chair, or Committee Member. Note: in 2017, APABA Silicon Valley will host the NAPABA Western Regional Conference, so we have created a special Committee to oversee planning and execution for this Conference.

General requirements, responsibilities and a list of positions are provided below. Please submit your Statement of Interest by 5:00 PM on Thursday, October 20, 2016 to apabasv.nom2017@gmail.com. Your email should include the reference code “Nom2017” in the subject line of your e-mail. Your Statement of Interest (65 words or less) should indicate the position(s) desired, qualifications (prior service/activity with APABA Silicon Valley, other bar associations, community work, etc.), goals for the position(s), and any other relevant information.

Important: If you presently serve as a Board Member, Committee Chair or Committee Member of APABA Silicon Valley, you must also submit a Statement of Interest if you would like to return to the same or different position(s).

Officers*:

  • President. The President oversees and guides the business affairs of APABA Silicon Valley, subject to the direction and control of the Board.
  • Vice President, External. The Vice President of External Affairs occupies a public-facing role and is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with the greater community, including other bar associations, community and public interest groups, etc. The External Vice President serves as APABA Silicon Valley’s “secretary of state” and performs the duties of the President in the absence of the acting President.
  • Vice President, Internal. Two Vice Presidents of Internal Affairs assist the President in management of APABA Silicon Valley by overseeing its committees and internal administration.
  • Secretary. The Secretary oversees adherence to APABA Silicon Valley’s Bylaws and the integrity of Officer and Board actions through proper record-keeping, provision of notice, and other duties incident to the office.
  • Treasurer. The Treasurer serves as principal accounting and financial officer for APABA Silicon Valley.

Board General Requirements and Responsibilities:

The Board of Directors manages the business and affairs of the organization.

  • Must be a current dues-paid member of APABA Silicon Valley.
  • Must be an attorney in good standing with the bar of those states where he/she is licensed to practice.
  • Should have prior experience serving on at least one APABA Silicon Valley committee.
  • Must attend and participate in monthly Board meetings, in person whenever possible (two or more absences may result in removal from the Board).
  • Must support APABA Silicon Valley events and fundraising activities (including using best efforts to secure sponsorship for at least one table at APABA Silicon Valley's annual gala).
  • Must participate in at least one major Board initiative (may be in conjunction with a committee project/event).
  • Should serve on at least one APABA Silicon Valley committee.

Committee Co-Chair / Committee Member General Requirements and Responsibilities:

Each committee should be co-chaired by two to three co-chairs, at least one of whom should be a Board member.

  • Must be a current dues-paid member of APABA Silicon Valley.
  • Open to all attorneys, law school students or graduates, and government officials who agree to abide by APABA Silicon Valley's Bylaws.
  • Co-chairs plan and lead committee meetings and activities.
  • Co-chairs must provide monthly reports to the Board on committee activities.
  • Co-chairs and members must attend committee meetings and actively participate in at least one major committee activity.
