The IP Committee is dedicated to providing career growth and professional development for IP attorneys. The Committee hosts several continuing legal education events during the year on current topics in IP law. The IP Committee aims to provide a platform for networking and continuing education of IP lawyers, aspiring IP lawyers, and APABA members.

CO-CHAIRS

Arpita Bhattacharyya

Arpita Bhattacharyya, Ph.D., is managing partner of the firm’s Palo Alto office and focuses on patent litigation, post-grant proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as well as client counseling. With an undergraduate degree in electronics engineering and a doctorate in biomedical engineering, Arpita brings diverse technical expertise to her practice in the areas of medical devices, diagnostics, computer software and hardware, and various other electrical and mechanical technologies. She draws on her technical versatility and broad base of patent law experience to advise clients focusing on emerging technologies, such as augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital health. She also co-leads Finnegan’s AI industry working group.

 

Tony Chen

Tony is a Senior Counsel at Kennedy Lenart Spraggins LLP.  He focuses his practice on the development and enforcement of intellectual property.  He helps clients develop patents in various technology areas ranging from simple mechanical devices to complex areas such as artificial intelligence/machine learning, generative artificial intelligence, distributed computing, wireless technologies, multimedia, processor architecture, virtual computing, and storage systems.

Jeffrey Liang

Jeff is a partner in the Intellectual Property group at Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, & Hampton LLP. Jeff combines his extensive engineering background and litigation experience to provide clients with an integrated, strategic approach to IP litigation. He has represented companies in all phases of patent disputes, including pre-suit investigation, negotiations, discovery, depositions, oral hearings, and trials. His practice includes district court litigation, IPR proceedings, and Section 337 investigations before the International Trade Commission, and he has represented clients in cases involving a wide range of technologies including computer architecture, IC design, cryptography, artificial intelligence, streaming media, networking, and wireless communications.

 

Ken Kumayama

Ken D. Kumayama is a Partner at Skadden, based in Palo Alto. He represents clients in a range of technology and commercial transactions relating to the ownership, protection and exploitation of IP. He also counsels clients on cybersecurity- and privacy-related matters, including with respect to the California Consumer Privacy Act, Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, data rights, and artificial intelligence and machine learning. Ken is fluent in Japanese and worked for more than four years in Japan. The Daily Journal has recognized Mr. Kumayama several times as one of the leading technology lawyers in California, including as a 2023 Top Intellectual Property Lawyer, 2022 Top Cybersecurity Lawyer and previously as one of the state’s Top Artificial Intelligence Lawyers. He also was honored as a 2023 Technology MVP by Law360 and has been selected as one of Lawdragon’s 100 Leading AI & Legal Tech Advisors, in addition to being named to Chambers USA and The Best Lawyers in America.

 

Jack Shaw

Jack is a Partner at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP. He focuses on intellectual property and commercial litigation, representing clients in industries including software, mobile app technologies, digital media & entertainment, machine learning, consumer electronics, semiconductors, telecommunications, mobile payment, internet, network, medical, and mechanical engineering. Along with patent litigation, his other IP experience includes copyright/DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act), trade dress, and trade secret matters. He has represented U.S. clients as well as clients headquartered in Asia and Europe. Jack’s commercial litigation experience includes unfair competition and breach of contract actions.

 

Tej Singh

Tej Singh is a counsel at Hogan Lovells US LLP, where he focuses his practice on patent and trade secret litigation and counseling. He received his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law and his B.A. (computer science & cognitive science) from the University of California, Berkeley.

Joseph Yang

Joe is a partner at PatentEsque Law Group, LLP, specializing in patent/tech transactions & JVs. Previously, he was VP/GC at Cryptography Research, Inc., and Counsel at Skadden (Palo Alto) where he led the IP strategy/transactions practice.  Joe has also been an expert witness, an arbitrator, and managed litigation & corporate IP portfolios.  Joe co-chairs the “Advanced Licensing” & “Advanced Patent Licensing” courses at PLI, teaches "Patent & Technology Licensing" at Stanford, and has taught “Patent Law & Policy” at Boalt. He is profiled in Marquis’ “Who’s Who in American Law,” and as a “World’s Leading IP Strategist” by Intellectual Asset Management magazine.  Joe has a JD from Stanford and a PhD from Caltech.
