APABA Silicon Valley 2015 Diversity Award Applications

Deadline: Friday, September 25, 2015

APABA Silicon Valley is now accepting applications for its 2015 law firm and corporate legal diversity awards. Each year, the bar recognizes applicants who demonstrate exceptional commitment to diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace and in the greater legal community.

APABA Silicon Valley & BALIF Joint Scholarship

Application Deadline: by 5:00PM, Wednesday, September 9, 2015

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley Charity (the “APABA-SV Charity”) and the Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (“BALIF”) are pleased to announce a special joint scholarship for law students who have a demonstrated commitment to the Asian Pacific American and LGBT communities.

PURPOSE: To recognize law students in the greater Bay Area who have shown excellence and achievement in law school, and:

  • Overcome personal hardships or challenges; and
  • Demonstrated leadership and service to the Asian Pacific American and LGBT communities.

AWARD: One joint scholarship of $3,000.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Application for the scholarship includes the following:

  • Résumé submission. Please include grade point average if applicable. The applicant’s grade point average and law school enrollment are subject to verification.
  • Essay submission (two page maximum). The essay should address how the applicant fulfills the above-mentioned purpose of the scholarship.
  • Interview. Scholarship finalists will be interviewed on September 20, 2015.

In addition, the APABA-SV Charity requires that the scholarship recipient:

  • Attend the APABA-SV 30th Anniversary Gala, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on October 16, 2015;
  • Attend the BALIF Annual Gala in 2016 (invited but not required to attend);
  • Become a Student Member of APABA-SV (free of charge) and BALIF ($10.00);
  • Participate as an APABA-SV Student Liaison at his or her law school by (i) advertising APABA-SV events and scholarships, and (ii) encouraging fellow law students to attend events and apply for future scholarships; and
  • Become a New Member with APABA-SV and BALIF upon graduation from law school.

DEADLINE: Applications must be received by 5:00 p.m., September 9, 2015. Interviews will be held on September 20, 2015.

2015 NAPABA Convention in New Orleans: 2 Public Interest Scholarships Offered by the Jung Foundation

Application Deadline: Oct. 9, 2015

The Charles & Melita Jung Foundation (Jung Foundation) is sponsoring two public interest attorney scholarships to the 2015 NAPABA Convention.  The scholarships are intended to encourage and make it easier for public interest attorneys to participate in NAPABA.

The award consists of the following: (1) Flight: the Jung Foundation will purchase for each recipients a round trip ticket from California to New Orleans, LA on Southwest Airlines; (2) Conference Registration: conference registration fee reimbursement at the NAPABA member public interest member rate (register by October 26, 2015); and for one of the two recipients (3) Hotel Stay: reimbursement for a 3-night stay at the Loews New Orleans Hotel.

APABA Silicon Valley Equal Justice Scholarship, funded by Lee Tran & Liang

Application Deadline: by 5:00PM, Wednesday, September 9, 2015

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (“APABA-SV”) Charity Foundation is pleased to invite applications for the APABA-SV Equal Justice Scholarship, funded by Lee, Tran & Liang.

PURPOSE: To recognize law students in the greater Bay Area who have:

  • Overcome personal hardships or challenges;
  • Shown excellence and achievement in law school; and
  • Demonstrated leadership and service to the Asian Pacific American community.

Although not required, strong preference will be given to those law students who interned this past summer or will be interning next summer at a nonprofit organization that serves the Asian Pacific American community and who show financial need.

AWARDS: Up to two scholarships of $5,000 each.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Résumé submission. Please include grade point average if applicable. Grade point average and enrollment are subject to verification.
  • Essay submission. (Two page maximum). The essay should address how the applicant satisfies the above-mentioned purpose of the scholarship. If interning at a non-profit organization that serves the Asian Pacific American community, please also address your goals for the internship.
  • Interview. Finalists will be interviewed on September 20, 2015.

In addition, APABA-SV Charity Foundation requires that all scholarship recipients:

  • Attend the APABA-SV 30th Anniversary Gala, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, on October 16, 2015;
  • Become a Student Member of APABA-SV (free of charge);

Staff Attorney - Asian Law Alliance

The Asian Law Alliance is seeking an attorney with experience or interest in housing law and working with API communities.

AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
The Asian Law Alliance (ALA) is a non-profit community law office that has provided legal services, community education and advocacy services since 1977 to the Asian and Pacific Islanders communities in Santa Clara County.  Priority areas are immigration, housing, domestic violence, public benefits and civil rights.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Client counseling and Representation:  Conduct intake; provide representation in landlord-tenant cases and other areas as needed.

Community Education:  Organize and conduct presentations on various legal topics.  Drafting and reviewing community education pamphlets.

Community Organizing/Advocacy:  Advocacy work on community issues as required; networking with other service providers, organizations and government agencies to enhance services to the Asian and Pacific Islander communities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Member in good standing of the California State Bar
  • Experience or interest in housing law.
  • Must have a demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the needs of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities and low-income communities
  • Bilingual skills in Asian or Pacific Islander language highly desirable
  • California driver’s license and own vehicle preferable

COMPENSATION:
Salary $43,600 - $51,850 (depending on experience).  Benefits include medical; dental; and vision plans; sick leave; paid vacation, 403(b) plan, flexible spending plan.
