The purpose of our scholarships is to recognize law students who have demonstrated leadership and service to the Asian Pacific American community, who have overcome personal hardships or challenges, or shown excellence and achievement in law school. APABA Silicon Valley Hosts Celebration Reception for Lifetime Member Judge Lucy H. Koh

On May 12, 2022, the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (“APABA Silicon Valley”) hosted a celebration reception for Judge Lucy H. Koh following her confirmation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Judge Koh is the first Korean-American woman to serve as a federal appellate judge. Judge Koh is a lifetime member of APABA Silicon Valley and previously held positions as a Board member and as a Co-Chair of our Civil Rights Committee.

Judge Koh is the first Korean American woman to serve as a federal appellate judge, and the second AAPI woman from California to serve on the Ninth Circuit.

APABA Silicon Valley Applauds the Re-nomination of Judge Lucy H. Koh to the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley applauds President Biden’s re-nomination of Judge Lucy Haeran Koh to serve on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. If confirmed, Judge Koh would become the first Korean-American woman and the second AAPI woman from California to serve on the Ninth Circuit. Judge Koh has served as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of California since her appointment in 2010, and previously served as a judge for the California Superior Court for Santa Clara County. Prior to serving as a judge, she spent fifteen years practicing law in the private and public sectors after earning a J.D. and a bachelor's degree from Harvard.

APABA Silicon Valley Congratulates Rob Bonta on His Appointment as California Attorney General

The Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley (APABA Silicon Valley) extends its heartfelt congratulations to Assemblymember Rob Bonta on his appointment as Attorney General for the State of California. It is impossible to ignore the historical significance of this outcome, as Assemblymember Bonta will be the first Filipino-American to serve in this role, and only the second Asian American Pacific Islander (“AAPI”) to hold this position. APABA Silicon Valley is hopeful that Assemblymember Bonta will continue his strong record of fighting hate crimes and advocating for social justice.

APABA Silicon Valley Condemns Anti-AAPI Hate Violence

APABA Silicon Valley (“APABA”) condemns not only the horrific mass shooting yesterday that targeted AAPI businesses and left numerous AAPI women murdered, but also the skewed and racist media coverage (or lack thereof) of this and the rise in anti-AAPI hate violence. Nonprofit organization Stop AAPI Hate reports that there were almost 4,000 anti-AAPI hate incidents from March 19, 2020 to February 28, 2021 nationwide. And since many hate crimes go unreported, the actual number of attacks on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is surely higher. Over 700 of such attacks have occurred in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2021 alone, many against elderly simply walking down the street in broad daylight.
